What is Legionella? Why should you care?

Legionella is a type of bacteria that can pose a serious health risk in water systems. You may have heard about it in the news often linked to outbreaks in hotels, hospitals, or large buildings. But what exactly is legionella, why should you care and should your facility be concerned?

What Is Legionella?

Legionella is a commonly found bacteria made up of many different species. One specific strain of concern is L. pneumophila which is capable of producing illnesses such as Legionnaire’s Disease or Pontiac Fever. It can be found naturally in freshwater environments, like lakes, streams, and in warm soils. The problem arises when it grows and spreads in man-made water systems particularly in warm, stagnant water and in water heating systems.

Why It’s Dangerous

Legionella causes Legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia that people can get by inhaling tiny water droplets contaminated with the bacteria. Vulnerable individuals such as the elderly or those with weakened immune systems are especially at risk.

Where It Grows

Common breeding grounds include:

  • Cooling towers

  • Hot tubs and spas

  • Decorative fountains

  • Shower heads and faucets

  • Hot water tanks and heaters

How to Control It

  1. Regular Water Testing – Routine sampling helps detect Legionella early.

  2. Temperature Control – Keep hot water above 60°C and cold below 20°C where possible.

  3. Disinfection – Use biocides or chlorine to control bacterial growth.

  4. System Flushing – Prevent stagnation in seldom used water lines.

  5. Risk Assessments – Especially important in healthcare or high-occupancy buildings.

Why Should You Care?

Legionella can:

  • Endanger public health

  • Lead to Legionnaires' Disease, other serious illnesses or death

  • Result in legal liability

  • Harm your reputation

The Bottom Line

The risk of Legionella can be greatly reduced if a comprehensive water treatment plan has been put into place. If you manage a building with complex water systems, it’s not just about staying compliant. It’s about keeping people safe and avoiding significant problems and liabilities.
